Move Planning Checklist
Pre-Planning
Have an inventory session. Decide what to move and what not to move.
Make arrangements for trip (hotel/airline reservations, routing, etc.)
Schedule a moving sale for items you won't move. Donate other items to charities. Get receipts for taxes.
If you plan to pack yourself, purchase the special cartons and materials you will need from Nationwide.
Gather personal records: medical, dental, school, birth, etc. arrange for schools to transfer transcripts.
Arrange to close or transfer department store, bank and other accounts. Empty safe deposit boxes.
Discontinue newspapers, utilities, oil delivery, landscaping and other scheduled services.
Change of address notification to Post Office, Social Security, Motor Vehicle Dept., magazines, friends/relatives.

One Week Before Move Day
Fill and transfer prescriptions for family and pets. Pack medications to carry with you.
Arrange to ship plants and pets. Get immunization records for pets.
Safely dispose of or give away all flammables (paints, paint removers, gasoline). Cannot go on the moving van.
Defrost refrigerator and freezer. Clean oven. Drain garden hoses. Have automobiles serviced.

The Day Before
Pack items to be carried with you and label "do not move"
Pack a box of items you will need right away at the new home (tools, cleaning supplies) - label them "load last".
Pack suitcases and prepare boxes for last minute dishes, utensils, bed linens, etc.

Be available on loading and delivery days to check items on the inventory sheet and walk through with the van operator to verify that everything has been loaded and delivered.
